How to backup data with different data backup methods?

It is important to create a data backup for reference during a system crash or major drive crash. Data on a PC, whether it is a server, a laptop or a desktop, can be divided into two categories: program files or data files. The data on any system runs the risk of being lost and it only makes sense to make a backup of all the important data to avoid problems during an adversity.

Loss of data basically occurs due to a number of factors such as hard drive failure, systems getting infected by viruses, human error, inadvertent formatting of a drive or erasure of certain data. To avoid loss of data, backing up data files is the safest option.

There are many ways to secure the data by making data backups. Some of these ways are:

  • Copying files
  • Drive Imaging
  • Using Archive Backups
  • Remote Online Data Storage
  • External Hard Drives

Data recovery is also an option but it is very expensive. It is always better to protect your files by creating a backup instead of restoring the data once it is lost.

Depending on the scale of your data, you can choose any one of the data backup ways to create a backup of your data:

Copying files

For small amounts of files, you can consider creating a copy on a DVD or a CD for data backup. The disks are portable, have no installation issues and are an ideal choice for securing data up to four or five gigabytes. This is the most common backup method and the easiest to implement.

Drive Imaging

Including operating system, device drivers, Windows registry, system files and everything within the disk volume, this method makes a full replica of the entire disk partition and takes minimum time to restore the backup, however large the backup be. This is the best method to be used during full hard drive crash scenarios.

Using Archive Backups

This method was introduced with Windows 2000 and now Windows XP comes in-built with its own backup and restore software. This software comes with an easy-to-use guidelines that contains a list of sections that help you decide what and how to backup. You can backup all files in a personal folder or certain files in a folder, depending on your specifications.

Remote Online Data Storage

You can even store your data online with the help of some backup software to create a backup of your data. Whether it is photos, music or business documents and financial folders, a remote backup would be created for everything. This ensures that whether it is a system crash or hard drive crash, your data remains safe and can be restored within minutes.

External Hard Drives

This is an ideal method for the home users. Whether it is your photos or your music, creating a backup in external hard drives is an easy-to-use, affordable and reliable method. Many drives come with backup software, making automatic backups a child’s play.
