Troubleshoot desktop crash errors

Just like any other part of a PC, desktop is an important part of the whole computing process. However, there are times when the desktop stops working and it also needs maintenance.

One of the most common problems is the desktop crashing. There are several reasons because of which desktop crash may occur.

This could happen because of the following reasons:

  • Bad RAM
  • Software conflicts
  • Hardware conflicts
  • The PC gets infected with viruses
  • Printer problems
  • Overheating

During a desktop crash, your documents, photos, music, everything is at risk. It is, thus, important to prevent your computer from crashing by following a few simple steps to maintain your PC.

Bad RAM

RAM problems lead to the blue screen of death. Whenever the blue screen of death appears, a message saying ‘Fatal Exception Error’ is flashed. This indicates that there is a fatal error by RAM because of a mismatch of chips. This crashes the machine. You will need to enter the BIOS settings to work around this problem and increase the wait state of RAM.

Software Conflicts

The desktop might even crash due to software conflicts. If an old program stops working after you install a new program, there might be conflicts between the two software. Reinstall the older software as there are chances that some of its files might have been overwritten by the new software. Another reason could be because of updates that lead to software conflicts. Make sure you make compatible updates and in case of error, reinstall compatible software.

Hardware Conflicts

If the desktop crashes after you connect a new hardware device to your PC and install software to run that hardware smoothly, check for the software. There is a chance that the software is not compatible with your operating system. Check for the more compatible software and install it on your PC. If this doesn’t solve the problem then it is possible that when you installed the software, Windows files were changed and now you would need to reinstall Windows.

Viruses

Often, there is desktop crash because of virus infection. Some viruses attack the hard drive and erase the boot sector. This makes it impossible for the Windows to load. To avoid this problem, install a good antivirus software on your PC that will scan your system and block any virus from accessing it.

Printer Problems

When you send a document for printing, a temporary file is created which is called a postscript file. The printer memory called buffer can be easily overloaded. This slows down the computer’s performance. If the printer starts printing unusual characters, it might lead to desktop crash. To clear the buffer, unplug the printer for 10 seconds. This will reload printer’s default settings and ensure that the printer works fine.

Overheating

Though CPUs are equipped with fans to keep them cool, sometimes the fans fail and the CPU starts to get overheated. This leads to the kernel error and lead to desktop crash. To avoid this from happening, make sure that your CPU fans are working and if possible, get a bigger fan installed in your CPU.

You can stop your PC from crashing by following a few simple steps:

  • Use a registry cleaner regularly. This will help you keep your RAM free and help you keep control over the programs installed in your PC.
  • Uninstall unwanted programs when you start your computer. This will ensure that there aren’t any unwanted programs on your system that make it slow or lead to software conflicts.
  • Scan your computer for viruses by installing a good antivirus software.
