It has happened often that while working on your PC, it suddenly stops responding, i.e., it freezes or the "blue screen of death" appears. The most common feature of a desktop freeze is “unresponsive” program. You might even get a pop-up message saying that a program has performed an "illegal option” or “is no longer responding."
There are many reasons as to why the desktop freezes or you see the “blue screen of death.” The most common reason being overload of the computer memory. Conflicts between software, virus attacks, incompatible software, etc. are other reasons for this error to occur.
However, there are a few ways to prevent your desktop from freezing or to prevent the “blue screen of death” from appearing.
Dust can lead to computer freeze by blocking the air passage from which the air enters to cool the system. The computer freezes because of over-heating when the air is unable to enter from the passage. It is, therefore, essential to clean the computer regularly and keep it covered when it is not in use.
If you have recently connected a new hardware device to your computer, there could be compatibility issues and hence the computer is locked. The possible solution is to disconnect the hardware and restart your computer. Then connect the hardware device again after making sure that it is configured properly.
If you have installed a new program and every time you try to run it, your desktop freezes, then the problem is occuring because of software conflicts. This means that the software is either not updated or not installed properly. It could also be because the software is not compatible with your operating system. To resolve this issue, uninstall the software and then install a compatible or updated version.
It is possible that some program or software that you have recently installed is not attuned to your operating system and that has caused your operating system to crash. To rectify this, you would need to reinstall the operating system and make sure that any program you try to install or run on your operating system is compatible.
The system may also cause the desktop to freeze because of some potential virus attack. This means that the virus has attacked your PC’s RAM. This issue can be avoided by installing a comprehensive antivirus software on your system and performing regular scans on the computer.
To prevent any data loss during a desktop freeze, save your documents regularly and create backup of your data. If the computer freezes, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and when the Taskbar opens, click on Endtask or turn off the computer.
