Registry is the central hierarchical database of Windows 2000 stores data that are essential for configuring system’s hardware and applications. This registry contains details about reference of running programs, user’s profile information, installed applications, folders property sheet settings, applications icons details, documents creation of each installed applications,and so on. Mostly the registry which is common to all Windows operating systems, with small differences between each. Text based .ini files are replaced by Registry. Security features of Windows 2000 permits administrator control access to registry keys.
Things to know while working on Windows 2000 registry:
To edit Windows 2000 registry system, just follow the steps included in the Microsoft documentation. But using Windows user interface is highly recommended instead of editing the registry keys directly. Care should be taken while using registry editor. If you use Registry editor incorrectly, it may cause some severe problem. This may damage your operating system also and may take you to reinstall the operating system. So using Registry Editor is your own risk. To use your Registry Editor, Go to 'Help' menu and select 'Contents'. Double-click the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) on the 'Contents' tab. Then read the topics that you want to learn and edit the registry setting of Windows 2000.
Before starting to edit the registry, take a back up of your registry keys that you want to edit. Else you can take Backup of your whole registry too. So to backup the registry key on which you are going to perform changes, first go to 'Start' and select 'Run'. Type regedt32 on the text box of the 'Run' prompt and click 'Ok'. It will show you a list of keys. Then point at the required key and click it. And in the Registry menu, save the selected key and click 'Save'. Then save the .reg file in the Save Inbox and select save your registry key. To backup the whole registry, use Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), or back up the System State through the Backup utility.
To restore the registry on Windows 2000 system, go to 'Start' menu and click 'Run' option on the 'Start' menu. Type regedt32 on the text box of the Run box and then click 'Ok'. On the registry menu, select the option of Restore and select the file that you want to restore, that is the file which you saved before clicking the 'Open' option and click 'Yes' to continue the restoring process. To restore the whole registry, Use backup Utility to restore the system state.
